This week, we wrapped up our personal narrative writing unit. Throughout this study, we have been looking at mentor texts for craft skills that help us build on elaboration techniques to enrich our stories.
Some of these techniques include crafting a strong lead to invite the reader in as well as a satisfying ending in which we say goodbye to our readers (without the hard stop of The End!).
Other ways kids stretched their thinking (and also their stories) was to include sensory details in their descriptions, to slow down the "hot spot" in their stories, and to bring their characters to life by including feelings, actions and dialogue.
Students shared their final stories with a buddy today and looked for the highlights of writing craft in each other's books. It was a happy celebration of the hard work and progress from the unit. Each of our young authors has grown so much this year!
