Today was our last Town Forest walk for the year and nature did its best to make it a pleasant one! Beautiful sunshine and warm weather and a showcase of flowers, plants and animals on view. A perfect day to explore and enjoy the great outdoors.
Our mission was to find the lady slipper flower - a wildflower in the orchid family. These beauties bloom every spring and are a special find! Their root system is connected underground so when you spot one, you usually see it flanked on either side with several others stretching out in a straight line of blossoms. These flowers require special care as if one flower is picked, the whole line dies and can take 40 years to regrow. We were very careful to look with our eyes and have our grown-ups take pictures.
Along the way, groups were excited by other sightings including baby ducks (and adults), red winged blackbirds, geese, frogs, a snake, and a baby heron. To cap off this grade adventure, Mrs. C. had a sweet cold treat waiting for us to celebrate a year's worth of walks - thank you Mrs. C.!
For our first graders, this was the last walk of the year but next year we will be back for more. For our second graders, this was their last walk with the 1-2s. We hope they will continue to enjoy and appreciate nature and spending time outdoors!
