Plant Parts

Our "budding" botanists continue to delve deeper into the world of seeds and plants. We wondered, how do plants make all those seeds? This week, we looked closely at flowers to see how all their special parts come together in a collaboration of pollination and seed production.

We took a sampling of flowers from the schoolyard to examine closely and identify key parts. Some of these terms were very familiar to the kids already - petal, leaf, stem. Others were new vocabulary they were introduced to - sepal, pistil, stigma. While we do not expect kids to hold onto these new words with mastery, we did want kids to get some exposure to these less familiar plant parts and their function in the production of more plants!

See the pictures below of our flowers dissected and matched to the appropriate labels. This was a challenging task, but all kids had access to full color reference sheets as well as two teachers.
