This week, we asked kids to create a 3D insect as a STEAM project. Such a project calls on kids to use their knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. They were each given one toilet paper tube, two index cards and a glue stick/tape to construct their critter. They could also use markers, crayons or colored pencils to add color to their work.
Their insect could be real or one of their imagination but it had to include all of the parts insects have: six legs and three body parts (head, thorax, abdomen) with an option for other features such as wings, stinger, antennae, mandibles, etc. We gave each insect two googly eyes (even though we know their eyes are actually much more complex). It was interesting to see the variety of different ways kids found to use the same materials in the making of their insects.
The "swarm" is hovering over and around our classroom doors, welcoming the kids in each day. Many teachers and students from lots of other classes have commented on their great work! Enjoy the pictures below!
