Special Guest!

Last week, Stephanos and Georgina (Ellie's dad and mom) came in to talk o us about Greece! We have been learning a lot about the Greece of the ancient world, but we enjoyed hearing about modern day Greece. Stephanos first showed us a map of the country of Greece - it has thousands of islands! He also talked to us about Greek gods and goddesses, including the goddess Ellie is named after! He also told us about some famous Greek people from the past, like Socrates and Alexander the Great (who Ellie's brother is named for!).

We looked at the Greek alphabet and learned the true pronunciations of some of the Greek names and words we have been learning (which were more authentic than our Americanized versions...).  We also learned that the colors of the Greek flag (blue and white) are taken from the colors of the sea and sky and that the true name of Greece is Hellas.  We learned about the many aspects of Western Civilization that were born in Ancient Greece are still alive today in our modern culture.

Georgine showed us examples of beautiful Greek art: paintings and a Greek kylix and amphora made of silver. She also showed us traditional Greek clothing that boys would have worn for folk dancing.  Ellie modeled a goddess outfit for us too! Stephanos and Georgine also brought in some yummy Greek foods for us to try - cheese pastries (that reminded the kids of a savory croissant), chocolates, and cookies. We enjoyed sampling them. The 1-2 kids are hoping to visit Greece themselves some day!

Thank you Stephanos and Georgine!
