Drumlin Farm

Here are some pictures from our field trip to Drumlin Farm. Below you will see kids around a cooking fire making traditional nokahik out of corn flour, water, maple syrup, craisins, and oil.  After cooking it on a flat rock that had been heated up in the fire, we all got to sample it. Most kids thought it tasted good - especially the dried cranberries.

Kids also got to try their hands at target practice using a dried corn cob with a feather in the back as an arrow. They needed to throw their practice arrow through a hoop! In another game, the kids joined hands around a deer skin and tried to pull another player to step on the deer skin (rendering them "out"). The group gets smaller and smaller with each round until there is a single winner.

Kids also got to attempt chores that would have been done by Native American children their age, like grinding corn and scraping the fur off a deer skin using a clam shell. They also learned how to use a pump drill to work on drilling a hole in a piece of wood.
