Snow Day Challenge - Odes to Snow!

Our young poets drew great inspiration from the blizzard that brought about our snow day.  A great collection is gathered together below with poems ranging from ones with beautiful images to others with playful language and even some clever acrostic poems. Enjoy!

Beautiful Snowflakes

Twisting and turning

In different designs and then

It rains down like a white

Orb that has mysteries to its self

Designs like nobody has ever

Seen before like pencils

That have poked holes in paper

And when it touches the earth the whole earth

Lilja Lion Cafe - Week 1

This week was the 1-2 opening of the Lilja Lion Cafe! Besides the obvious joy of baking and preparing the foods, our work crew from Slatebeard House did a great job greeting customers, helping them make selections from our delectables and meticulously worked through the math of making change (with a little help from our adult cafe managers as needed…).

At our post-cafe marketing meeting, we looked at our gross profits, deducted our expenses (to lots of groans from our budding capitalists) and deemed our net profits a success. Next week, we will review our menu to see if we can make changes to items offered or prices for items to improve upon our first week.

Punctuation Celebration!

Today we had our Punctuation Celebration! Kids shared the book they wrote during our Punctuation Study with a buddy and a few stufty friends. Throughout the study, we have been taking a close look at different punctuation marks in the books we read and how they give messages (like traffic signs) to readers. After identifying, labeling and thinking about what these marks tell us to do, the kids created a book in the genre of their choosing.  They were tasked with making thoughtful choices about when and where to use punctuation effectively.  The most important punctuation we stressed was the use of endmarks (. ? !) to end sentences and capital letters to start new ones. Next week we start a nonfiction writing unit, but we have let the kids know that they must bring what they have learned about punctuation into the writing they do from now on - punctuation can NOT take a vacation!
