Black Figure Vase Artwork

As part of our Greek study, the kids of the 1-2s tried their hands at creating their own design for a black figure vase in the style of ancient Greek pottery. The pottery of ancient Greece was both useful and beautiful. The people of ancient Greece made pots, jars, bowls, and vases for storing food, carrying water, and celebrating special events. 

Many pieces were decorated with detailed paintings that showed scenes from daily life, battles, sports, and stories about gods and heroes such as Zeus and Heracles. Greek pottery is famous for its black-figure and red-figure styles, where artists painted people and designs in careful patterns. Today, these ancient pots help historians learn about Greek culture, mythology, and everyday life thousands of years ago.

We are really looking forward to seeing some authentic red and black figure vases when we visit the MFA! Ask your child to tell you about their work of art!
