We had a very eventful walk in the Town Forest today with unbelievably unseasonal weather! We had a special friend of the 1-2s join us who is a photographer of birds in nature and who gave us some good tips of what to look for and listen for while we are out looking for birds.
Among the finds he showed us in the Town Forest were some great horned owl pellets! You can see the hidden "treasures" inside some of them (fur and bones!). We also found coyote, deer and weasel scat along the way. Spring is springing in the Town Forest! We saw skunk cabbage sprouting (they were less enthusiastic about this because it does, indeed, smell like skunk) and blooming snowdrops.
A big discovery was the beaver dam in the waterway of the Oak Street entrance. While we did not spy any actual beavers, we saw downed trees that bore the signs of beaver teeth! We wondered if these were the same beavers as those in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe…
We did some seed scattering in the meadow in the hopes that the wildflower will be growing and blooming when we visit for our walks in April and May.
