Special Guests!

As we come near to the close of our Dragon Study, we have had two special guests come in to present on a dragon theme! One was Salimata (Sali)Jaffe (Kia's mom) who did a magnificent job storytelling a serpent tale from Mali. It had a classic theme of beauty on the inside and was very much enjoyed by all. One of the storytelling moves we loved was how Sali wove English and Bamana into the telling so we could hear the lyrical sound of the Bamana and then hear the English translation. By the end, many kids thought they could even understand some of words from the Bamana language. Sali also sang parts of the story and even did a dance to accompany one of the song parts of the tale. We closed with three hip-hip-hoorays for a very entertaining experience!

Our other visitor was Barbara Lockwood (Mrs. M.'s and Mrs. A.'s mentor teacher for their 1-2 student teaching long, long ago). She brought with her a modern dragon sculpture created from repurposed items like bicycle chain.   She also showed a beautiful quilt that a parent had made for her class which incorporated student artwork in the squares. The topstitching was done in colorful thread in a flame design and the back had a scaly pattern that looked very dragonish!

 Enjoy the pictures below!
