Special Guest!

This week, Peter Chopur (Dominik's dad) came in to talk to us about Poland. Peter grew up in Poland until 4th grade when he moved with his family to Boston. He and Dominik are excited to be going for a visit to Poland this summer to see family there who are still working the farm that Peter worked on as a child. They grew potatoes, a staple crop for Poland, and had lots of adorable (but working) cats.

Peter showed us where Poland was on a map of the world as well as the red and white flag of his home country. We also got to see pictures of Dominik and his cousin from his last visit to Poland.  We were delighted to hear that storks are the local birds of the area and that many make their nests on household chimneys (which is a sign of good luck!).  Each year, the same pair of storks returns to rebuild their nest to prepare for the new chicks. While it is tricky to see them unless you move a distance away to see the top of your chimney, the sounds of their clacking beaks can be heard by people down below.

Peter also talked to us about traditional Polish foods like pierogis (filled potatoes), bramborák (potato pancakes), kielbasa (sausages). They also pick cherries and make them into jelly. By this point, the kids's stomachs were rumbling!  Peter told us that the national sport of Poland is what kids here call soccer, and showed us a mini version of the uniforms "footballers" in Poland wear. He also passed around some Polish bills and coins. The kids were impressed with coins that were worth many Polish "dollars" or złoty.
