The 1-2s have just finished an engineering unit on plant packaging. Our goal was to create a package that would protect and preserve our plants so they would come out of the package undamaged and healthy. Our packages also needed to have a label to communicate how to care for the plant.
Each group used a 2 liter bottle or a cardboard juice carton to contain all parts of the plant. Our packages needed a transparent part to let light in and to display the plant. Some groups wrote “This End Up” or drew an arrow to show consumers how to carry the package. One group even created a special handle! We had to also focus on the cost of our package so they weren’t too expensive to make.
Once we created our packages, it was time to test them. One test was the shake test. Mrs. M. shook our packages to see if the plant would tip over. Another test was to leave the plants in their packages by the window for a few days to see if they would stay healthy in our packages.
After the tests, we went back to our tables to redesign our packages to improve them. This was a really fun and awesome study! Check out the pictures of our package designs.
