Readers Keep Track of Their Thinking!

As we head into the spring, kids' growth as readers leads them into longer books! There are more characters, more events, and more details to remember. It is important for kids to stop and think about the book as they read instead of waiting until they are finished with the book to synthesize everything that happened. In the look-back, after so many pages, it can be hard to connect the ending of the book with what was happening in the beginning and the middle. 

One way readers can keep track of all these literary elements is by leaving themselves a trail of "bread crumbs" (in the form of sticky notes) so they can track their way back to the important events from earlier in the book. By stopping to jot down important events and how characters handle them, readers build a habit of stop and think and soon no longer need the prompt of a sticky note to stop and reflect on what's happening in their books.
