The second round of stations for Greek Study are in full swing! In this round, new learning experiences are at each station to further deepen and extend the students' understandings of Ancient Greek culture and mythology.
At our Linguistic Station, kids are taking another run at acting. Building off their experience and feedback from their plays in the first round, the kids are choosing new myths to dramatize with increased knowledge of what makes for a powerful performance. They enjoy taking on the persona of the range of characters they meet in these myths!
At our Mathematical Station, our endeavor turns geometric. After hearing the story about Pandora's Box (which released all manner of misfortunes into our world), the students are asked to create a three dimensional box and to write and draw on each of its faces a gift they would like to give back to humanity. Health, clean environment, love, friendship, and food are examples of what our kids would like to gift to the world.
Our artistic station spotlights a highlight of Greek art - the beautifully decorated red and black figure vases. We achieve this look using scratch art paper. Kids choose a type of Greek Vessel to be the outline of their design like an amphora, a kylix, or a krater. On the face of their vase, they depict a character or even from mythology by scraping away the black topcoat of the paper to leave behind a behind an image.
At our Underworld journal station, the student did some research on a kids website about the history of Ancient Greece and recorded interesting facts they learned. Our kinesthetic table had clay for kids to manipulate into a mythological character of their choosing- god, goddess, hero or monster! And at the musical station, we looked at some videos of traditional Greek dancing and then groups choreographed their own dance to traditional Greek music.
