Veteran's Day

This week we talked about Veteran's Day and who veterans are: the men and women of our armed forces. Some kids shared that a family member or friend is a veteran and we discussed ways to honor veterans in our community. Each child wrote a letter to a veteran that a staff member will be delivering to someone she knows who works with veterans. Some kids talked about having a moment of silence on Monday to think about those who have served our country.

Kids wrote about their appreciation for the men and women willing to risk their lives for the defense of our country and admired the courage that takes. They also wrote a little about themselves - what grade they're in, their favorite subject at school, and something they like to do. One child wrote that he loves to play with Legos and that he hopes that will bring back happy memories to the veteran who receives his letter.

Our goal in this project was both to show our gratitude to members of our military but also to help the students gain a deeper understanding of what this day off from school is all about. The Scholastic News in next week's homework pack will be about Veteran's Day. We encourage you to engage in a conversation with your child to further reinforce the importance of this day of recognition.

Enjoy pictures below of the patriotic and cheerful images the kids made for their cards.
