February "Forest" Walk

This week we had a rainy day for our Town Forest walk, so we did a closer-to-home Lilja Forest walk in the woods behind the playground. The trees sheltered us well from any drips and drops and the soft snow showed us a myriad tracks and scats (coyote and rabbit among them). Also spotted were several active spiders on the move as the temperatures had warmed up a bit today.

We walked down to Morse's Pond and observed the ice in a nearby puddly pool. The kids tried using sticks and rocks to see if they could break the ice - very fun stuff. Some of the enjoyment came from traversing up hills and sliding down them.  Nearby, we spotted a pair of mute swans. We realized just how large they are when one of them chased off a Canada goose - it was huge by comparison! As we headed back to Lilja School, a few kids stopped off for a serene moment of meditation on this lovely winter day, surrounded by trees and the peace that comes from outdoor spaces.

All in all, it was a great walk albeit not in our favorite forest spot. It's nice to explore new woods now and then too. Enjoy the pictures below of our time outside today.
